The problem that users have encountered with SEO over the years is this:

When one of the important factors in the algorithm becomes common knowledge, website owners put a lot of effort into their website to shape their site to comply with that factor (like keyword stuffing, for example). Unfortunately, that means that those websites are trading position on a search result for something else: they are trading position for usability.

If you are a retailer and you are eager for the top spot, please heed our advice: loading up your site with one or two of the SEO strategies can only get you so far. When you do that, you’ll often make your site less readable and enjoyable for your viewers. So, you may get a higher ranking, but you are not longer selling people your product nearly as well, for example.

A very common mistake made with SEO today is with keyword densities.

Why do search engines rank sites anyway? What are they trying to achieve?

I will save that answer for my next post

In the early days of the Internet, it was mainly used by government, military, and technical types to keep in contact with each other. It didn’t have a real commercial use; it was fairly functional.

Then, as time changed and “regular people” started going onto the internet, it became a tool to communicate and be informed, then it transformed into a place be entertained and to buy things.

Search engines were developed to help people find things. That way, people didn’t have to know the exact URL they wanted to visit before they went online. They could go to a search engine which operated as a central hub and type in their search request. The search engine would find sites related to that search and return them.

To find sites, search engines would send out “robots” or “spiders” which are little programs that crawl through a website and learn everything they can from your content and from the code (which is the part that no one can see but it makes your site function). Then they would report back to the search engine what they’ve discovered on your site and the search engine would then sort you based on what the robots learned. (It sounds very science fiction but it is really quite simple).

When you type into the search line the topic that you’re looking for, the search engine goes through its files and looks for websites related to that topic (as identified by the spiders) and lists them for you. In many cases, search engines list 10 URLs per page and typically those ten become the most clicked URL of all the ones in the search. (People will rarely click past the first 3 or 4 pages of a search if they haven’t yet found what they are looking for; they’ll just go and try a different word to search with). And, the higher on the list you are, the more often you’re clicked. (The 9th URL is clicked more often than the 10th. The 8th is clicked more often than the 9th. The 7th is clicked more often than the 8th, etc.) The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place URLs returned in a search are click many, many more times compared to the ones further down the list.

So, as you can imagine, people sought feverishly to discover how to get onto the first page of a search and (more importantly) how to get in the top 3 spots. To do this, they learned what they could about what spiders and robots looked for and how search engines evaluated websites. When they learned this, they tweaked their websites to be more favorable. This is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Essentially, it’s the activity of making adjustments in your website to appear higher on search engines.

And it is big business. If you were to Google “SEO” you would find many people claiming to have found the secret to Search Engine Optimization, promising higher clicks to people who buy their programs. The reality is that each search engine uses a variety of things to determine how it ranks websites.

Individually, each factor used by the search engines may not mean much, but when put together in a calculation (an “algorithm”) the search engines wield a lot of power over where they think your website falls in the big scheme of things.

So what are the factors? Most of the search engines keep their algorithm a secret now.

Not too long ago, it was common knowledge about what made a website popular on the Internet. It was a combination of such things as meta tags (which are lines of code) and keywords on your website.

But unethical website owners, desperate to get ranked higher, took advantage of the algorithm’s factors and would do things like “keyword stuffing” to get ranked higher. Keyword stuffing is when they would fill their pages with keywords. It was incoherent to people. Sometimes, in order to appear more legitimate to the people who would be shopping at their site, they would change the font color of their keyword lists to match the background of their website, thus making them invisible. There are many unethical methods to accomplish this but there are many ethical methods as well. Search engines work hard to uncover the unethical methods and then build their search programs in a way to avoid ranking those unethical methods.

What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

If you have a website – whether it’s an online store or simply an informational site – you have likely heard about SEO. It’s like high school peer pressure: “everybody’s doing it!” SEO has become the name of the game if you want to enjoy higher rankings in search engines.

Getting people’s attention

Long before there was an internet, people worked hard at getting someone else’s attention. Stores used billboards that were shocking and unusual, television commercials struggled to get and keep the attention of people. Even door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales men would dump dirt on the clean carpets and vacuum it up.

If you run a business you know that there is plenty of competition out there and each one of your competitors is working just as hard as you to get the attention of the consumer. Then the Internet came along and it got a whole lot worse.

Residual Income is another term for recurring income. In a nutshell, there are three (3) types of income streams that you may have coming into your business.

If you do a one-time job, sale or perform a contract, you get paid once and the income stops there.

If you do a normal 9 to 5 job, you will continue to get paid as long you continue to work for your employer—often called a linear income. This is the type of income that the majority of workers “enjoy.” Even if you are a neurosurgeon, lawyer or engineer, you are only paid as long as you continue working. You stop working and the bank account dwindles.

The third type of income is the residual income where you are paid even after you have stopped working. For example, you wrote a book and as long as your book continues to sell, you will continue to receive royalty income for a work done once.

The majority of rich and affluent people created wealth through a form of residual income stream. Take singers for example; they can still continue to receive royalty from the sales of their records made decades ago. They can even repackage the same oldies and sell them to generate new income. They don’t have to spend time in the studio to record new songs in order to have the cash keep flowing in! This is the most ideal situation of the three. We would all like to work once and get paid over and over again. That is the power of recurring income!

The majority of professionals that enjoy this type of income belong to the creative fields such as actors, writers, singers, and inventors.

All that I include in my closing is a simple statement. This closing statement is meant to add some trust and help the visitor to feel safe entering their personal information.

The way I close is by adding the statement:

We will NOT rent, trade, or release your name to any third party for any reason – ever. We respect YOUR email privacy and hate spam with a passion.

That simple statement can substantially increase your conversion rate.

That finishes off the areas of the squeeze page and I will begin talking about SEO for your page next time.

Talk soon…

Keep Moving Forward!

We discussed the main page body and went over listing the benefits of your newsletter, ebook as your bullet points.

Now we need to address one of the most important parts of the squeeze page, the call to action.

You need to specifically tell your prospect what they need to do. Take a look at my squeeze page at: <a href="http://www.curestressandanxiety.com" target=_blank">www.curestressandanxiety.com

You will notice when you scroll down the page that I am very specific when I tell my prospect to enter their first name and their email address. I also tell them to click the Free Instant Access! button.

I specifically told them what to do. You will also notice that I added a small statement to help them to feel safe by letting them know that their information is kept 100% confidential.

This call to action model has been proven time and time again to be very successful.

Next time I will talk about the closing.

After you have finished with your sub-headline it is time for the main body text. You should start out with a lead-in to the bullet points.

An example would be: When you sign up for the XYZ newsletter you will discover…

After this statement you would want to start listing 5-8 bullet points. Here are some tips for writing your bullet points…

Each bullet point should be 1 sentence, no more than 2 sentences

Each sentence should be short

Each bullet point should list a benefit of your newsletter/product

Make them stand out. Use bold on 1 bullet point and regular on the next, then bold again etc…

Check out the bullet points used on the squeeze page located at www.marketingsecretsteleseminar.com/spider

Notice how short and specific the bullets are. Notice that they tell you the benefit of using her service.

My next post will talk about the call to action.

Lets discuss the sub-heading of your squeeze page. When you are putting together your squeeze page you need to let your potential subscriber know what is expected of them and what they will receive in return.

You really need to convey this message in one sentence. Here is an example from my squeeze page on my stress and anxiety newsletter page:

“Give us 60 minutes per week and we’ll Show You How You Can Eliminate Stress, Overcome Anxiety And Ease Panic Attacks”

I am telling the prospect what is expected of them. The prospect is to give me 60 minutes per week.

Now I tell them what they will get in return, they will learn how to Eliminate Stress, Overcome Anxiety And Ease Panic Attacks.

I like to close the sentence by putting my name after wards.

- Dave McDonough

I have my name align on the right side of the page. You can see a sample at:

<a href="http://curestressandanxiety.com" target=_blank">Overcoming Stress and Anxiety

You will see my headline, sub-headline and my name.

My next post will go over the body/bullet points.

The most important part of a squeeze page is the headline. This is the first thing a visitor will see when arriving at your website. Here are some tips to help you create a headline that sells.

1) Make your headline font red. The reason for red is that it captures your visitors attention and makes them focus on that headline.

2) Make your font Tahoma. Tahoma is much easier to read than the other fonts. You should also make it large. 28px is pretty good starting point.

3) Use a statement that makes your visitor curious about what they will learn by reading more. You can see an example of this by reading the headline at <a href="http://www.curestressandanxiety.com" target=_blank">www.curestressandanxiety.com

4) If at all possible, try to use some words that end in ly. Studies shaw that words that end in ly tend to drive up sales and opt-ins.

My next post I will discuss the sub-head and the above the fold area of your squeeze page.

I would appreciate any comments you may have below.
